Decide how to use Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help a local agriculture business improve their sustainability and productivity.

 

Learning Program Overview

Working in groups, students are introduced to the increasingly pervasive Internet of Things (IoT). They both participate in and facilitate learning within their class through short challenge requiring the use of sensor technologies. Understanding of sensor technology networks and data is approached through visual comparison and assessment of data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

After an introduction to IoT and GIS, student groups explore how these technologies are impacting agriculture here in Victoria and around the world. Each group will utilise the Design Thinking model of problem solving to design a data display or sensor tech’ solution for a local agricultural business.

This introductory session intends to equip students with an awareness of some of the potential roles sensor tech’ and GIS can play in enabling people to make other people’s lives better. Students should also leave with a working knowledge of how people can utilise metadata from technologies to generate greater understanding of how people interact with the world around them.

 

Success Criteria

•             Appreciation for the vast array of applications where IoT and GIS data systems can improve human potential within society.

•             Clear utilisation of at least one form of IoT of GIS in group decision making throughout the group’s problem-solving process.

•             Reflection on and understanding of the Design Thinking process undertaken is evident in group’s pitch.
