Use empathy, geometry, and vector-based design to create thermally efficient flat-pack shelter solutions for people experiencing homelessness.
Learning Program Overview
Working in groups, students investigate characteristics of different materials, human-centred design of living spaces, the mathematics of polyhedrons and Kirigami, flat-pack design principles, and more!
Students are equipped with knowledge of processes to enable them to work collaboratively to solve a very real problem. This program is student-directed and encourages discovery of real issues affecting people in Bendigo and other Australian communities. They develop “persona profiles” to aid in their empathy and understanding of how various accommodation issues affects real people. The program is structured and facilitated with an emphasis on learning by hands-on processes and trial and error testing. Utilising the Design Thinking process for problem-solving and their newfound technical abilities in digital design for subtractive manufacturing equipment, students create original solutions to common problems. Ultimately, each group will pitch their solution to the room and receive feedback.
Success Criteria
• Solution must address the group’s chosen stakeholder requirements.
• Work constructively with other group members to deliver a thoughtful solution.
• Designed solution considers emerging technological trends and material sustainability.
