Program Highlight - Data Defenders: Hack-Proof Heroes

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to race against hackers and protect vital data from online threats? Bendigo Tech School’s new Data Defenders program invites students in Years 7 and 8 as well as first-time visitors to experience exactly that, in partnership with the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Guided by pre-recorded briefings from Jeff Smith, ACS Vice President, participants learn about the realities of cybercrime and how to guard against it.

Working in teams, students tackle puzzle-based challenges with an escape-room twist, using advanced technology like HoloLens headsets, Looking Glass holographic displays, Flipper Zeros, Wi-Fi Pineapples, and even RoboMasters. They also experiment with 3D printing, explore lock-picking basics, and discover how cyber threats can appear in daily life. Along the way, they gain valuable problem-solving skills, deepen their understanding of digital security, and see firsthand how collaboration can outsmart even the most sophisticated threats.

By blending immersive challenges with real-world lessons, Data Defenders sparks students’ curiosity about cybersecurity and encourages them to consider the many career opportunities in this field. The program highlights how everyday technology is connected to broader systems, empowering participants to become responsible digital citizens and confident problem-solvers. From critical thinking to creative experimentation, there’s something here for everyone to discover!

Teacher testimonial: "I enjoyed the way you took abstract concepts like filtering data and gave a physical illustration like the marbles to get that concept across. It helps these students so much."
