What if you could turn your own creative design into a delicious chocolate treat? Throughout Term 1, students from a combined Year 9/10 Food Technology class at Victory Christian College had this exciting opportunity through the Choc Tech program, a new addition to the program offerings at Bendigo Tech School in 2025.
This hybrid program was co-designed with the teacher from VCC who had a desire to incorporate more design and technology into her classroom activities, with some sessions taking place at VCC and others at BTS. Students were initially introduced to a design brief and then used the various stages of Design Thinking to come up with an idea for a chocolate mould representing something about themselves.
Students then transferred their idea into a 3D model using Tinkercad (an online 3D modelling program). After several stages of re-design and refinement, students were then able to pressure form their 3D printed item into a mould for use in the chocolate making process. Other highlights of the program were a visit from chocolatier Sue Schrieber of Choclartiste to discuss all things chocolate making, including the tempering process and also a visit to Indulge Fine Belgian Chocolates in Bendigo.
